What is the difference between a psychic and a medium?
Within this blog, I discussed one of the biggest misconceptions within this work, one thing that gets very confused with the other. What is the difference between a psychic and a medium?
There is a very big difference between a psychic and a medium. Yes, as I mentioned before, we all have the ability to tap into our psychic abilities and also to work on our mediumship. The thing about mediumship and psychic abilities is that they get very confused with one another.
What is a medium?
Mediumship is the communication from the spirit world. It is the ability and the process of allowing the spirit world to make contact using a psychic medium to relay messages and proof of survival. From both loved ones and friends of those who are in the spirit world and pass them onto the physical world (the world we live in). This practice has been used for thousands of years and has become much more popular within the last century.
Mediumship takes a long time to master. Through experience and good practice mediums become very good at what they do. It is an ability to really tap into and use all of your senses given to you at birth. We are all born with the ability to communicate with the spirit world; however, some people are much more developed and in tune with mediumship.
Psychic mediums have a very deep understanding of themselves. Also a good understanding of how they are able to communicate with the spirit world. Each and every individual medium works very differently from the other, and they have their strengths in certain criteria of mediumship.
What is a psychic?
I suppose there is a very stereotypical assumption that psychics know everything about everybody and everything that’s going to happen. What being a psychic is really about is tapping into your intuition and getting a sense of what is going on around you. Such as a situation, an event or somebody else’s life.
I am a firm believer that the future is not fixed 100% and that we have choices and decisions that are the outcome of our future. Psychics are able to give you some guidance, show you the way forward, and give you support and positive information as you have free will in life.
A psychic works on their intuition which comes from the solar plexus. AKA your gut feeling as the solar plexus is located in the center of your stomach. Many people experience gut feeling which is your intuition talking to you. As we are all psychic to some degree and we can learn to use that intuition.
Psychics use different tools also in their work such as:
– Tarot cards
– Rune stones
– Oracle cards
– Palmistry
– Crystal balls
– Crystals
– Pendulums
– Psychometry
– Angel cards
– Tea leaves
– Astrology
And the list goes on.
When working as a psychic you work very closely also with your spirit guides. They relay information and sensations to you to help you with a reading or with your own intuition. Learning how to be a psychic does not take as long as learning to be a medium. Tapping into your intuition is a lot easier to master.
Tarot cards
One of the most common tools used in psychic readings is the Tarot cards. They are a set of 78 individual cards that are very accurate and a very in-depth tool that I use. I personally find them very deep and personal with myself and my clients. They seem to cover all walks of life and all situations that we find ourselves in. Over thousands of years they have been used, and the actual origin of them is very controversial.
Learning how to read the tarot cards is also a very personal journey. Out of so many different decks, possibly thousands of different decks out there, you need to find a deck that you really like and feel works for you.
There is a well-known myth that you should never buy your own tarot deck and that someone needs to get one for you in order for it to work properly. That is a complete myth and is not true.
Apart from mediumship, tarot is my second biggest passion. And one topic thing that I really enjoy writing about and working with. I have devised my own tarot spreads throughout my experience.
Tarot cards do not give you any connection to the spirit world. Being only used solely for psychic readings.
How long does it take to become a medium?
This varies from person to person. Some people are much more in tune with mediumship than others. In other words, they are more naturally born as a medium. Mediumship is a very difficult thing to teach as everybody works very differently than the other.
Along the journey of mediumship development, you learn not only a lot about the spirit world but you learn also a lot about yourself. The older that you are, the more life experience that you have tends to aid mediumship development. Certain sensations and events in your life get played out in your mind when you are connecting with the spirit world.
For example, if I am connecting with somebody who passed away in a car accident. I myself was in a very serious car accident in 2012. Sometimes that scene and memory of that accident get played back to me and the sensations of being thrown around and rolling in a vehicle.

Life experience for a psychic
The more life experience and the more you have been through in life really increase your mediumship. Through the many senses that we have such as clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, and above all trust and confidence in yourself, your mediumship will thrive.
In order to give professional readings, this can take a number of years. Possibly around 3 to 7 years before you are confident and experienced enough to give half an hour to 1-hour readings.
There is no need to rush your growth as a medium. Taking breaks, even if they last for a year or more, can be beneficial as working with new emotions and energies can be overwhelming. It is important to acknowledge that this work can be taxing and emotionally draining.
I have personally taken breaks during my development journey. And I found that they were extremely beneficial. When I returned to my mediumship practice after these breaks, I noticed a significant improvement in my connection to the spirit world.
How long does it take to become a psychic?
This does not take as long as mediumship development. Another thing with psychic work is that it is so diverse. As I have mentioned above, there are tarot cards, palmistry, oracle cards, angel cards, runes, and so on. Each of these individual fields of expertise has its own development times.
For example, to learn the tarot is probably around 1-2 years. Again the more you do it and the more you practice it, the better you get. Also, when using any form of psychic tool, you are also working with your solar plexus and your spirit guides. Relying on them and your intuition and what is being shown in your mind. Psychics are not meant to know everything and I don’t think your guides are either, as not everything in life is 100% set in stone.
Can psychics tell the future?
As I am a firm believer that not everything in life is 100% fixed and that we make up our own futures with our own choices, that means the future can go in all different directions. Yes, psychics can see how the outcomes can be and they can also give you warnings and guidance on life choices and life changes.
Psychics can also see what is going on in your current situation, such as your love life, career, family life, etc. Also, what went on in your past as to move forward there are things that hold us back that have gone on before and past traumas and past events can give us a lot of confidence and trust issues in ourselves and others.
Psychics and mediums cannot tell you what to do. They can only give you advice on what you can do, how to move forward, and the outcomes of the decisions and life paths that you can take. Also, the spirit world cannot tell me what to do either. They can also guide you and help you to move forward with your life and prove to you that death is not the end.
There is always hope in life no matter how dark or difficult things are; mediums and psychics can really help you along the way and give you the guidance and support that you need at times.
